Become a counsellor who is truly prepared for the role...

Because the people who will one day sit with you deserve a counsellor who is truly prepared for that privilege

Counselling Training you can trust

The Counsellor's Path was built around a simple conviction: that the people who one day sit with another person's vulnerability deserve to be thoroughly prepared for that privilege - not just qualified, but grounded, self-aware, and ready.

That's what we're here to do.

We believe that becoming an effective counsellor requires more than passing a course. It requires self-awareness, humility, and a genuine understanding of the responsibility that comes with this work.

That conviction is at the heart of everything we do here - and it shapes how we teach, how we support our students, and the standards we hold ourselves to as a training centre.

We recognise that choosing to train as a counsellor is a significant step - and that the centre you choose matters more than most people realise when they are starting out.

Whether you are working toward professional registration or exploring counselling for personal development, you will find a safe, well-grounded, and genuinely supportive place to do that here.

  • are all awarded by CPCAB, the UK's leading counselling awarding association

Why choose us?

CPCAB qualification — with a clear path to practice

Every qualification at The Counsellor's Path is awarded by CPCAB, the UK's only awarding body dedicated solely to counselling.

Level 2 leads directly onto Level 3 and Level 4 - the same awarding body throughout - giving you a consistent, nationally recognised route from first steps to qualified practitioner.

Tutors who are practitioners, not just teachers

The people who teach at The Counsellor's Path are active counsellors. They bring current, real-world practice experience into every session.

Small groups. Deliberately.

Counselling is a relational discipline. You cannot learn it in a large group. Our cohorts are kept small so that the learning environment reflects what the work itself demands.

Built for people with full lives

The evening online cohort runs one evening per week for thirty weeks — designed for people who are working full-time and need flexibility without sacrificing structure.

The daytime blended cohort combines in-person classes in Bracknell with online sessions — ideal for those with daytime availability who want the option to learn face to face.

Founded on a specific conviction

The Counsellor's Path was founded by Abi Gray, a BACP-accredited counsellor in practice since 2015.

Her conviction - shaped by her own experience of therapy as a client as much as her work as a practitioner - is that good intentions are not enough.

The quality of training directly affects the people who will one day sit in front of the counsellors we train.

Live, tutor-led learning — not self-directed study

Every session is taught in real time by a practising counsellor. You are not working through materials alone. You are in a room — online or in person — with a tutor and a cohort.

A significant part of every session is hands-on. You will practise counselling skills directly with other trainees — being the helper, being the helped, and learning to notice what is happening in both.

Counselling skills are developed by doing them, reflecting on what happened, and doing them again. Not by reading about them.

The teaching is live. So is the learning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous qualifications to start?

No. The Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills is open to anyone aged 18 or over with a commitment to personal development and a willingness to engage in skills practice. No prior qualifications are required.

Where do your courses take place?

Our Level 2 and Level 3 courses offer two delivery options:

  • The first is fully online - all sessions delivered live via video call with your tutor and fellow students.

  • The second combines live online sessions with regular face-to-face classes at our Bracknell centre.

Our Level 4 Diploma is delivered predominantly face-to-face at our Bracknell centre. One session in four takes place online via video call, giving students the opportunity to develop confidence working therapeutically in an online environment.

Our training venue is at the Open Learning Centre in Bracknell, a 15-minute walk from Bracknell train station and easily accessible from Guildford, Camberley, Farnham, Reading and across Surrey and Berkshire.

What is CPCAB and why does it matter?

CPCAB — the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body — is the UK's only awarding body dedicated solely to counselling qualifications.

All of our courses are CPCAB-awarded, which means they are nationally recognised and accepted by professional bodies including BACP and NCPS as a route to professional registration as a counsellor.

Can I study online and still qualify as a counsellor?

Not entirely.

For Level 2 and Level 3, our courses are available fully online - delivered through live, tutor-led sessions via video call in real time with your tutor and fellow students present. This is accepted by professional bodies as equivalent to classroom-based learning at these levels.

However, Level 4 - the Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling that leads to professional registration - must be predominantly face-to-face. CPCAB and professional bodies require that at least 75% of Level 4 teaching is delivered in person.

Our Level 4 is therefore delivered via face-to-face classes at our Bracknell centre and online classes scheduled roughly every 4th week.

It is worth knowing that distance learning qualifications — where you study at your own pace without live interaction — are not accepted as a route to Level 4 or professional registration.

What is the full route to becoming a qualified counsellor?

The CPCAB route runs from Level 2 through to Level 4.

  • Level 2 introduces core counselling skills.

  • Level 3 deepens theoretical knowledge and personal development.

  • Level 4 is the Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling — the qualification that leads to professional registration with BACP or NCPS.

At The Counsellor's Path we offer all three levels, giving you a consistent, nationally recognised qualification route from first steps to qualified practitioner.

How do I know if I am ready to start?

If you are curious about counselling - whether as a career or for personal development - Level 2 is designed to be your starting point.

You do not need to be certain about where it leads. Many of our students begin with questions and find their answers as they go.

If you are unsure, get in touch and we will have an honest conversation with you about whether the course is likely to be right for you.
