About Abi
Abi works from a Transactional Analysis modality — a relational, humanistic approach grounded in the belief that people are capable of change, that human beings are fundamentally OK, and that greater self-awareness leads to greater autonomy and wellbeing. These values are not just theoretical for her — they shape how she works with clients and how she teaches.
Abi holds a BA (First Class Honours) in Transactional Analysis Counselling and is working towards qualification as a Certified Transactional Analyst in the Psychotherapy field, having undertaken advanced psychotherapy training at The Berne Institute.
Abi is a BACP-accredited counsellor in private practice and brings over a decade of direct client experience into every session she teaches.
When it's time to relax and recharge, Abi can usually be found exploring the UK in her campervan with her dog.
Background
Before training as a counsellor, Abi built a varied career spanning engineering, retail management, and organisational development — from manufacturing engineer to store management and customer experience roles across Waitrose and John Lewis, and more recently NHS transformation work. It was alongside this career that her interest in people — and in what genuinely helps them — led her toward counselling training.
Teaching
Abi has been teaching counselling since 2015 - from Level 2 counselling skills through to Level 5 group facilitation. At The Counsellor's Path she primarily teaches the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
She is drawn to teaching for the same reasons she is drawn to practice: a belief in the human capacity for growth, self-discovery, and greater autonomy. Helping a trainee understand something new about themselves - and watching that understanding change how they work with others - is, for her, the privilege of the role.
Counselling Experience
Abi has worked as a counsellor in NHS Talking Therapies, a young people's counselling service, and in private practice since 2016.
