Frequently asked questions - Counselling training in Bracknell

How long does it take to become a qualified counsellor?

Training to become a qualified counsellor typically takes three to four years of part-time study. At The Counsellor's Path, Level 2 takes 18 or 30 weeks, Level 3 takes a further 18 or 30 weeks, and Level 4 Diploma (the practitioner qualification) takes two years. Most students complete the full pathway whilst working.

What qualifications do I need to start counsellor training?

No prior qualifications are required to begin at Level 2, only a willingness to engage in skills practice and personal development. To progress to Level 3 you will need a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, and to enter Level 4 you will need both Level 2 and Level 3.

Will a free Level 2 counselling course get me onto a Level 4 programme?

No. Free government-funded Level 2 courses are self-paced and awarded by awarding bodies such as NCFE or TQUK.

Because they are typically delivered via e-learning rather than live tuition, they are not accepted as entry qualifications onto Level 4 Diploma programmes by CPCAB-approved counselling training centres or professional bodies such as BACP.

If your goal is to qualify as a counsellor, the qualification you begin with matters, and it needs to have been delivered live.

A CPCAB Level 2 course, delivered live - as at The Counsellor's Path - is the recognised first step on the professional pathway.

How much does counselling training cost in Bracknell?

The full pathway at The Counsellor's Path costs £999 for Level 2, £1,099 for Level 3, and £3,250 per year for the Level 4 Diploma.

All three levels offer an instalment plan - where a deposit secures your place, with the balance spread over monthly payments.

Additional costs at Level 4 include personal therapy, supervision, and BACP student membership.

Can I train as a counsellor while working full time?

Yes. The Counsellor's Path offers a Wednesday evening cohort at Level 2 and a Monday evening cohort at Level 3, both running fully online, designed specifically for people in full-time work.

Level 4 requires a greater time commitment including placement hours, but many students complete it alongside part-time or flexible employment.

Is online counselling training recognised by professional bodies?

Yes, provided it is delivered live.

Level 2 and Level 3 courses at The Counsellor's Path are taught in real time by a practising counsellor, with live group sessions and practical skills work in every class. This live delivery is what makes them accepted as the pathway onto the Level 4 Diploma, the practitioner qualification recognised by BACP and NCPS.

Free, self-directed online courses at Level 2 and Level 3 do not meet this requirement and are not accepted as progression onto a Level 4 programme.

Where is The Counsellor's Path based?

The Counsellor's Path is based in Bracknell, Berkshire.

All in-person sessions take place at the Open Learning Centre, a 15-minute walk from Bracknell train station. The centre is easily reachable from Reading, Guildford, Camberley, Woking, Farnborough, Staines, Wokingham, Ascot, and Windsor.

The fully online evening cohorts are open to students across the UK.

What can I do once I qualify as a counsellor?

On completing the Level 4 Diploma, you can register as a qualified counsellor with BACP and NCPS and begin working with clients in agency, organisational, or community settings.

Roles include counsellor in a college, charity, or third-sector organisation, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner in NHS Talking Therapies, and with experience, independent private practice.

Why train with The Counsellor's Path?

If you are considering counsellor training, you are probably weighing up a number of options, and some of what you find will look similar on the surface. It is not all the same. Here is what we think is important when making this decision:

A CPCAB qualification — with a clear path to practice

Every qualification at The Counsellor's Path is awarded by CPCAB, the UK's only awarding body dedicated solely to counselling.

Level 2 leads directly onto Level 3 and Level 4 - the same awarding body throughout - giving you a consistent, nationally recognised route from first steps to qualified practitioner.

Tutors who are practitioners, not just teachers

The people who teach at The Counsellor's Path are active counsellors. They bring current, real-world practice experience into every session.

Small groups. Deliberately.

Counselling is a relational discipline. You cannot learn it in a large group. Our cohorts are kept small so that the learning environment reflects what the work itself demands.

Live, tutor-led learning — not self-directed study

Every session is taught in real time by a practising counsellor. You are not working through materials alone. You are in a room — online or in person — with a tutor and a cohort.

A significant part of every session is hands-on. You will practise counselling skills directly with other trainees — being the helper, being the helped, and learning to notice what is happening in both.

Counselling skills are developed by doing them, reflecting on what happened, and doing them again. Not by reading about them.

The teaching is live. So is the learning.

Built for people with full lives

The evening online cohort runs one evening per week for thirty weeks — designed for people who are working full-time and need flexibility without sacrificing structure.

The daytime blended cohort combines in-person classes in Bracknell with online sessions — ideal for those with daytime availability who want the option to learn face to face.

Founded on a specific conviction

The Counsellor's Path was founded by Abi Gray, a BACP-accredited counsellor in practice since 2015.

Her conviction - shaped by her own experience of therapy as a client as much as her work as a practitioner - is that good intentions are not enough.

The quality of training directly affects the people who will one day sit in front of the counsellors we train.

Testimonials

"This course is challenging — there is a lot of personal growth and increasing self-awareness, balancing working and family life with seeing clients in placement and coursework. I found that Abi gently supports all of this. The word that comes up for me is 'steady' — approachable, consistent, encouraging, warm, reliable, clear in communication. As the course has progressed I have found my confidence in practice growing. I would highly recommend this course."
