Counselling training near Guildford
The Counsellor's Path offers CPCAB-awarded counselling training accessible from Guildford across three levels: Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies and Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
Together, these form a complete pathway from first steps to qualified practitioner status and eligibility for registration with BACP and NCPS.
Courses are available fully online or as a blend of online and in-person sessions at the Open Learning Centre in Bracknell, easily accessible from Guildford and the surrounding Surrey area.
Do I need to travel to Bracknell?
Not necessarily - and for many students from Guildford, not at all.
The Wednesday evening cohort at Level 2 and the Monday evening cohort at Level 3 are fully online. Every session is live and tutor-led, but you attend from home. No travel required.
The Friday cohort combines online sessions with four in-person days at the Open Learning Centre in Bracknell. Bracknell is approximately 30 minutes from Guildford by car or train - and those in-person days are spread across the course, not weekly.
The Level 4 Diploma is delivered predominantly in person in Bracknell, with 75% face-to-face and 25% online. Students regularly travel to us from Guildford, Woking, Camberley, Farnham, and the wider Surrey area.

Frequently asked questions - from people training near Guildford
What is the difference between an NCFE Level 2 and a CPCAB Level 2?
Both qualifications sit at the same level on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and will give you a grounding in counselling skills — but they come from different awarding bodies and that difference matters if you're thinking beyond Level 2.
NCFE is a general awarding body offering qualifications across many different sectors. Their Level 2 in counselling skills is a valid introduction to the subject, but it isn't part of a specialist counselling pathway.
CPCAB — the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body — exists exclusively for counselling and psychotherapy training. Their qualifications are designed as a structured progression route from Level 2 through to qualified practitioner level, and are recognised by the leading professional bodies BACP and NCPS.
If you have completed an NCFE Level 2 and are looking to progress onto a CPCAB Level 3 or Level 4, you may be asked to demonstrate equivalence — that is, to show that the content and learning outcomes of your NCFE qualification are sufficiently comparable to the CPCAB Level 2. This isn't always a barrier, but it does add a step, and the outcome will depend on the training centre and their admissions process.
At The Counsellor's Path, we deliver CPCAB qualifications at every level. That means from the moment you begin your Level 2, you're on a coherent, professionally recognised pathway — with no gaps to bridge or equivalences to demonstrate as you progress.
I work full time in Guildford - is there a counselling training option that fits around that?
Yes. The Wednesday evening online cohort at Level 2 runs one evening per week from home - no commute, no daytime commitment.
This cohort was built specifically for people in full-time work who need a qualification that fits around a busy life, not the other way around. Level 3 follows the same pattern on Monday evenings.
I've found a free Level 2 course - is that enough to progress to Level 4?
No. Free government-funded Level 2 courses are typically self-directed and delivered via distance learning. They are not accepted as entry qualifications onto Level 4 Diploma programmes by specialist counselling training centres or professional bodies such as BACP.
A CPCAB Level 2 delivered live - as at The Counsellor's Path - is the recognised first step on the professional pathway. If you are serious about qualifying as a counsellor, the qualification you begin with matters.
How far is Bracknell from Guildford and how often would I need to travel?
Bracknell is approximately 30 minutes from Guildford by car or train. If you choose the fully online Wednesday evening cohort at Level 2 or Level 3, you would never need to travel.
If you choose the Friday blended cohort, travel is required for four in-person sessions spread across the course.
At Level 4, the majority of teaching is in person in Bracknell - most students find the journey straightforward and factor it into their weekly routine.
Is a CPCAB qualification recognised by BACP and NCPS?
Yes. The CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is a BACP-approved qualification. On successful completion you can apply to register as a qualified counsellor with both BACP and NCPS. The Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, delivered live, form the accepted pathway onto the Level 4 Diploma.
Why train with The Counsellor's Path?
The Counsellor's Path is a small, specialist training centre - not a college, not a platform. Every course is delivered live by a practising counsellor, in small groups, with hands-on skills practice in every session. All qualifications are awarded by CPCAB - the UK's only awarding body dedicated solely to counselling - giving you a consistent, professionally recognised route from Level 2 through to qualified practitioner status.

Testimonials
"This course is challenging — there is a lot of personal growth and increasing self-awareness, balancing working and family life with seeing clients in placement and coursework. I found that Abi gently supports all of this. The word that comes up for me is 'steady' — approachable, consistent, encouraging, warm, reliable, clear in communication. As the course has progressed I have found my confidence in practice growing. I would highly recommend this course."

The Counsellor’s Path was founded by Abi Gray, a BACP-accredited counsellor who has been in practice since 2015.
Her conviction - shaped by her experience both as a practitioner and as a client in therapy - is that good intentions are not enough. The quality of training matters deeply to the people who will one day sit in front of the counsellors we train.
All qualifications at The Counsellor’s Path are awarded by CPCAB.
